Cardinal Hill offers specialty care for children from birth to young adulthood who have experienced a traumatic injury, live with a debilitating disease or developmental difficulties. These programs are designed to enhance physical, social, cognitive and behavioral learning abilities. Cardinal Hill’s state-of-the-art facility and team of caring professionals support each child/adolescent and their family’s recovery and progress.
Your child will receive care through a team approach. The staff works with the family/caregiver to develop a treatment plan that fits the individual needs of each child. The treatment team maintains communication with referring physicians, while focusing on the child’s rehabilitative needs.
Your child will participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy a day, with additional therapy on the weekends when indicated. In addition to the Child, Family and Caregiver, members of the treatment team may include:
• Respiratory Therapist
• Rehabilitation Nurse
• Social Worker/Case Manager
• Physical Therapist
• Certified School Teacher
• Occupational Therapist
• Child Development Associate
• Speech Language Pathologist
Your child truly is the focus at Cardinal Hill. Individual counseling, support groups, family education and referrals for community resources are all available. Cardinal Hill’s state-of-the-art facility and team of caring professionals support each child/adolescent and their family’s recovery and progress.
A typical treatment day...
During an inpatient stay at Cardinal Hill a rehabilitation physician and nurse are available 24 hours a day and will review
your child’s care daily. Your child will work with experienced professionals who are experts in their field of care. Family members
are included in the treatment team, and we encourage active family participation as the child works to achieve functional goals.
Physical Therapist works on:
• strength, movement and balance
• ability to move in and out of a chair or bed
• sitting, standing and walking activities
Occupational Therapist works on:
• feeding, grooming, dressing and bathing
• getting in and out of the bathtub/shower
• getting up and down from a chair or toilet
• home activities
Speech Language Pathologist works on:
• speaking, listening, reading and writing
• memory and thinking skills
• swallowing and eating techniques
Respiratory Therapist works on:
• training on equipment use, oxygen needs
• management of pulmonary symptoms
• breathing techniques
Social Worker/Care Manager works with:
• assistance with discharge plans
• information on community resources and support groups
• communicates with family
Therapy gyms, lounges and dining rooms are all located within or near each unit. nursing stations are centrally located for easy accessibility.

Our therapists are able to expand from the traditional opportunities for therapy to offer:
heated, accessible Aquatic Area on campus
lifeguard on duty
playground, computers, pool table, fooseball, cornhole, board games, ping pong and air hockey
weekly visits from certified pets and trainers
various breeds are available to fit your child/teen’s comfort level
located on the Cardinal Hill campus
The goal of our therapy program is to help each child gain as much independence as possible.
Parents/Caregivers need to understand both the short-term and long-term needs of their child. Our program encourages family members/caregivers to stay with the child to be trained and to practice the care needed in a medically supervised setting. This
involvement helps prepare everyone for a successful return to home and the community.
Our specialized therapists are able to assist your child’s school system and your child to make a successful transition back to the academic setting. We offer both onsite and offsite educational services:

It is important for the school to be notified of the physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral changes that may affect your child’s social and academic success.
Cardinal Hill’s Child and Adolescent Program offers many programs and events that give children and families the opportunity to participate in activities. Some community outings that are available are:

Continuum of Care
When your child’s condition progresses, the staff will modify and adjust your treatment plan within our extensive network of services. Our continuum of care allows you to make a smooth transition into the next level of care. Cardinal Hill provides comprehensive Outpatient Therapy and Home Health Care for both children and adults. We offer Award Winning Home Care services in Fayette, Woodford, Jessamine, Franklin and Madison Counties.
