Childcare Assistant

Duties

Our Childcare Assistants assist teachers at the Cardinal Hill New Beginnings Childcare Center. These volunteers oversee children in daily activities and maintain discipline as to assure a healthy and safe environment for the children.  Childcare Assistants assist the teachers in preparing and implementing daily activities.  They will oversee daily activities such as play time, nap time, outside time, etc. They will attend to the needs of the individual children (diapering infants, rocking infants, putting shoes on children, etc.)  The Childcare Assistants will also perform occasional tasks such as stocking diapers, clean changing area, and putting down cots for naptime.

Other duties may include:

A.  Direct children in self help skills

  • Take children to the bathroom
  • Wash hands and faces
  • Wipe noses
  • Get children ready to go outside
  • Tie shoes

B.   Set up and serve meals

  • Prepare bottles and/or infant food
  • Feed infants
  • Lunch and snack

C.   Clean up as necessary

  • After meals, snacks and feedings
  • After art
  • Soiled clothes
  • Soiled chairs
  • Straighten room

The Childcare Assistants will be trained by the New Beginnings Manager and teachers.  Volunteers will be in daily contact with New Beginnings staff, children and parents and collaborate with department staff and with other departments as necessary.

Qualifications

Patience and a sincere interest in children's development are required.

All volunteers must attend a general volunteer orientation as well as a department specific orientation.

Requires the ability to lift children weighing up to 50 pounds, perform moderately difficult manipulative skills, walk, sit, reach, crouch, bend, stand for prolonged periods, and remain in uncomfortable positions for long periods.  Ability to work with young children.

Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with parents, children, and co-workers as necessary, understand and follow safety guidelines and understand the employee handbook and all hospital policies.
