The ALS multidisciplinary clinic is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of clients with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gerhig’s disease. The mission of the clinic is to support the ALS client and family by establishing a team approach for the management of a progressively deteriorating disease.
The client and family receive personal attention and a commitment to care, crucial to the management of the disease by Dr. Edward Kasarskis and a strong team of therapists from Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, along with representation from the ALS Association Kentucky Chapter (www.alsaky.org). Dr. Edward Kasarskis, a neurologist specializing in neuromuscular disorders, specifically ALS at the University of Kentucky and VA Medical center, heads the clinic.
Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital serves as the site for the nationally certified ALS clinic. The clinic, scheduled on Mondays, provides licensed, experienced therapists who assist the client by developing treatment programs for their disease. The disciplines involved include Occupational therapy, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, and Speech - Language Pathology. A registered dietician addresses the client’s nutritional needs and case management issues are addressed by a licensed social worker.
Clients can be referred to the ALS clinic for follow up evaluations after a second opinion appointment with Dr. Kasarskis. The second opinion appointment with Dr Kasarskis can be scheduled by the client’s physician through the University of Kentucky (859-323-5661 extension 265). If the client chooses to continue treatment with Dr Kasarskis, they will be referred to the ALS association Kentucky Chapter to coordinate clinic appointment.
