Pet Therapy

THERAPY DOGS AT CARDINAL HILL
Our dogs come to Cardinal Hill once a week to the Conservatory where they spend time visiting with our patients.  It is wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of everyone who visit with the dogs.  Not only do the dogs provide a reminder of home, but they also can motivate people to accomplish a task. It could be something as simple as reaching out to pet them, or holding a treat while they perform a trick.  The most important thing is that the dogs help to improve the patient’s quality of life.

Will Coffman Recreation Room

Will Coffman is an ambassador of Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, having been a patient following a spinal cord injury in 1997. During his stay at Cardinal Hill, Will saw the need for a space that patients could escape to and enjoy time with family and friends.  He decided to create the Will Coffman Recreation Room to serve the patients of Cardinal Hill.  The room includes a ping pong and a pool table, board games, foosball, air hockey, a patient library and a computer and printer.  The room also includes a big screen television, leather couches and chairs.

Painting at Cardinal Hill

Cardinal Hill is proud to present the opportunity for our patients to tap into their inner artist twice a week and participate in a painting activity.  We offer different options to our patients including painting wooden objects such as birdhouses, picture frames and small jewelry boxes, as well as painting on canvases.  We also do other crafts as they are available.  Many of our patients come to us claiming they are not artistic, but leave the session with a beautiful piece of art!

Therapeutic Garden

With the help of a grant from the Junior League of Lexington, Cardinal Hill Hospital created a Therapeutic Garden in 2006.  The goal was to create an area where patients and their families could enjoy being outdoors and a place therapists could bring patients that would expand the traditional opportunities for rehabilitation.

Soon after its inception, it was evident that the therapists would benefit from more extensive education on gardening. They wanted to offer the most accurate and thorough information possible to their patients.
